Rust-through pipe & muffler
Salt-air corrosion
Bay Area moisture and salt rot the muffler and mid-pipe first. They run coolest and trap condensation. When a section rusts through, the car gets loud and may drone. We cut out the rotted section and weld or clamp in a new piece, rather than replacing the entire system.
Flange & gasket leaks
Blown joints, sudden noise
The bolted joints between exhaust sections use gaskets that blow out, and the flanges themselves rust and crack. A sudden volume increase and a ticking under load are the tells. We replace the gasket or the flange and re-seal the joint, a far smaller job than a whole pipe.
Flex pipe failure
Cracked braided section
The flex pipe behind the engine absorbs engine movement; the braided section cracks with age and engine-mount wear. You get a loud rattle on acceleration and an exhaust smell. We replace the flex section and check the engine mounts, since collapsed mounts are what overworked the flex pipe.
Broken hangers
System sagging or banging
Rubber hangers perish and metal brackets rust, letting the exhaust sag and bang against the floor or subframe over bumps. It is a cheap fix caught early (new hangers), but a dragging system can crack a pipe or stress a flange, so it is worth doing before it cascades.
Heat-shield rattle
Buzz at idle or low RPM
The thin metal shields that protect the floor from exhaust heat rust at their mounting tabs and buzz. It is not dangerous, but it is annoying. On the lift we confirm it is the shield, not a broken hanger, before re-securing or replacing it.
